Karonga

We found the most mature Faidherbia/maize
parkland in Karonga district.

Here you can see all ages of trees.

Some of the trees we saw were so old they were
broken down and hollow.

They were a lot of work to measure, but the
temperatures were lower than in Mwanza.

We did some work with axes on the trunks of the larger
trees, but I really didn't spend much time at that. I was
waiting to get back another piece of equipment.

  1. Tracy,
Dumb question, but I'll ask it anyway: If the trees are good at fertilizing the soil, why are you cutting them down? I'd like to here more about your work. The pictures are great.

  2. Hi Elizabeth,

There are no dumb questions...A lot of money is now being poured into carbon credits. We are hoping to cut down a few trees (less than 40) so that we know how much carbon is in this tree at a given age and diameter. Then development people can include them in payment for carbon credit schemes for farmers in developing countries.

Glad that you like the pictures.
